Review of "The Flatshare" by Beth O'Leary

I absolutely devoured this book! I found it to be such an enjoyable read, and it was really easy to delve into. It is light hearted, warm, and funny, and it was one of those books in which the characters fast began to feel like friends to me. I cried and I laughed at it, but most importantly, I thoroughly enjoyed every minute I spent reading it.

At a time like the one we are currently living in, it is books like The Flatshare that we need in our lives, as it is such an enjoyable book. Though it does discuss some darker topics, in particular emotionally abusive relationships, it is ultimately a story of love and friendship, and how you can recover from awful things if you have the right people around you to help you through the hard times.

I don’t always love novels that are based on romance, as I often find them too cheesy, but Beth O’Leary somehow managed to strike the balance between cheesy and cheeky, making it a fun and quirky read as opposed to making you cringe every five minutes. I started this book not expecting it to live up to the hype, but I finished it having fallen in love with the characters and wishing it hadn’t had to end.

Despite having thoroughly enjoyed it, I did find that the plot developed quite slowly, with the core of the story not really coming into play until around halfway through the book. However, the slower build-up does give you time to get to know the characters better, which I personally think is essential to a good story. Overall, it’s a great read if you want an easy-to-digest and heart-warming story.
