6 podcasts to help us learn about race

In my last post, I made a commitment to become a better ally to the black community. I’ve spent a lot of time this week listening, reading and learning. This movement must maintain momentum, and I will continue to help in any way that I can. In this post you will find a short list of some of the podcasts which might be helpful in our anti-racist education. Listen to them, talk about them, learn from them. It’s on us to educate ourselves and to use our privilege to initiate real change.

About Race with Reni Eddo-Lodge – This is a podcast by the author of the bestselling book Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race. The aim of this podcast is to ‘take the conversation about race a step further’. In each episode, Reni speaks to key anti-racist activists about how recent history has led to the current situation surrounding race.
Slay in Your Lane – A podcast by award-winning authors Yomi Adegoke and Elizabeth Uviebinené, this podcast explores news and popular culture while driving the conversation around the experiences of black British women. It discusses many of the themes discussed in their book of the same name, including finances, relationships, and employment.
Crime Noir The Podcast – This podcast centres around criminal cases involving the unsolved disappearances of black people over the year. Candice Gaines started the podcast as a means of increasing awareness around cases which historically have not made it into the mainstream media, and to reclaim the narrative around these cases by replacing misinformation with truth.
Good Ancestor Podcast – Hosted by Layla F. Saad, anti-racism speaker and author of Me and White Supremacy, this podcast speaks to prominent change makers about how we can all become better ancestors to our children by ‘creating a legacy of healing and liberation’. It’s about finding the hope and strength to dismantle the legacy of white supremacy, and to create a better future for those who come after us.
Truth Be Told – This is an advice podcast which looks at how to be yourself in a world that is against you. It is aimed at giving BAME people advice on how to thrive in a society in which the odds are against them. This week’s episode discusses ‘The new Civil Rights Movement’.
Intersectionality Matters! – Hosted by Kimberlé Crenshaw, a leading scholar of critical race theory and civil rights advocate, this podcast draws awareness to issues of intersectionality. In recent weeks, the podcast started a new conversation series called ‘Under the Blacklight: The Intersectional Failures that COVID Lays Bare’ which focuses on the impact of Covid-19 on different communities in our society.

I hope this list helps!
